London Heathrow Airport records growth in June

London Heathrow has reported that more than 6.6 million passengers travelled to and from the airport in June.

The figure represents a 1% decrease in passenger traffic when compared to the number recorded during the same month last year.

The year-on-year decline in passenger traffic at Heathrow Airport is a result of flight cancellations due to adverse weather, as well as recurring French industrial action.

In May 2016, Heathrow recorded significant passenger traffic flying to Latin America, which was up by 3%, and East Asia, up by 2%.

The rise in passenger volume on these routes is said to have resulted from the increased services of Colombian national airline Avianca, as well as additional A380 flights to Singapore, Thailand and Korea.

Passenger traffic to China and Mexico also recorded an increase of 7% during the same period.

Cargo volumes at Heathrow Airport saw a significant rise of 2.1% last month, with an increase to China of 11%, India up by 3.3%, and Turkey up by 3%.

The airport intends to increase its cargo-handling capacity in a bid to expand British businesses trading with existing and new markets.

As revealed by the latest polls, more than two-thirds of MPs in the Parliament are supporting the expansion of the airport with the development of its third runway.
