Kempton, Germany-headquartered logistics services provider Dachser has inked a deal with the Japanese logistics company Nishi-Nippon Railroad Co to form a joint venture in Japan.

Dachser Japan K.K. is to open its first office in Tokyo at the end of this year.

The JV will offer air and sea transport services through Japan but will also be connected to Dachser’s overland transport network in Europe.

Yves Larquemin, current managing director Dachser South Korea, will also initially head Dachser Japan.

EdoardoPodestà, chief operating officer Dachser Air & Sea Logistics, observed: “Customers in Japan and worldwide looking for reliable and resilient door-to-door services will benefit from Dachser’s logistics expertise, comprehensive global network and advanced digital information systems.”

Yves Larquemin, who is to take over as managing director Dachser Japan and Dachser South Korea, added: “Japan is the world’s third-largest economy and a key player in the automotive and electronics industries.

“There is also enormous business potential for pharmaceutical and medical products.

“The combination of sector-specific expertise and globally connected services means that we can offer our customers logistics that adds value.”

Dachser is a family-owned company doing business primarily through its Dachser Air & Sea Logistics and Dachser Road Logistics operations.

Its businesses have a presence in 41 countries.

Last year, it handled a total of 81.1 million shipments weighing in at 42.8 million tonnes.

In March, Dachser confirmed that its Air & Sea Logistics business growth slowed year on year in 2022 due to increased capacity in air and sea freight and disruption to business in China.

The division recorded an increase in revenue in 2022 to €2.4bn, up 16.7% compared to the previous year’s figure of €2.1bn.

However, the logistics services provider noted the number of shipments it handled fell by 7.3% over the year.
