Swissport Commences Ground Handling Services at Palma de Mallorca Airport
Ground services provider Swissport has begun handling at Spain’s third-largest airport, Palma de Mallorca.
It began handling at the airport on March 12.
In 2023, Palma de Mallorca came ninth in the list of Spanish airport operator Aena’s cargo gateways by volume.
According to the handler, Swissport’s expansion into Mallorca complements its already strong footprint in the Spanish airfreight sector.
It also operates five air cargo centers in Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Valencia and Zaragoza.
“We embrace our new venture in Palma de Mallorca fully committed to providing outstanding service and to being a reliable partner for airlines, airports and further stakeholders,” commented Dirk Goovaerts, Swissport chief executive for the CEMEA (Central Europe, Middle East and Africa) region and its global cargo chair.
He added that Swissport would be leveraging its industry-leading expertise to enhance the performance of the airport.
Swissport’s Spanish air cargo centers form part of a global network of 115 air cargo facilities. It handled approximately 4.7m tons of airfreight in 2023, only slightly down on the 2022 figure of 4.8 million tons.
Several of its warehouses have been certified for handling pharmaceuticals by IATA’s Centre of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) Pharma standards programme and by the British Medical and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), for example.
