Munich Airport cargo volumes face 78% year-on-year decline during second quarter of this year

Munich Airport has experienced a 78% year-on-year decline in cargo volumes during the second quarter of this year. The airport also posted a 46.5% year-on-year decline for the first half of this year — from 162,583 tons in 2019 to 87,134 tons this year.

“The effects of the coronavirus pandemic are reflected in the traffic statistics for April and May in particular,” the hub said in a statement.

In the second quarter of 2020, passenger traffic at Munich Airport “almost came to a standstill” as a result of virus-related global travel restrictions. This in turn led to the significant loss of bellyhold capacity.

“Special flights with cargo planes that transported medical supplies to Munich made an impact here,” the hub added.

Meanwhile, the number of take-offs and landings fell by 92% during the second of this year. As a result, the airport recorded its lowest quarterly result since it opened in 1992.
Jost Lammers, Munich Airport chief executive, commented, “Just like the airlines, we are in a difficult situation through no fault of our own, which is posing considerable challenges.

“We are now having to put Munich Airport through a phase of consolidation that will last for a number of years. However, with regard to medium- and long-term developments, I’m still confident that our airport will resume its role as a significant European air transportation hub.”
