German freighter hub continues airfreight growth despite coronavirus outbreak

Leipzig/Halle continued to record growth in its airfreight volumes in July, despite the coronavirus outbreak.

The German freighter hub registered a 17.6% year-on-year increase in demand during the month to 122,727 tons.

The growth reflects an increase in the use of freighters as a result of the loss of the majority of bellyhold operations because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Overall, about 60 cargo airlines make use of the airport and serve more than 200 destinations.

“This growth is supported by the express freight business operated by DHL and the positive developments in volumes handled by other air freight and logistics companies,” the airport said.

Over the first seven months of the year, cargo volumes at the airport are up by 6% to 765,583 tons.

The airport has also handled dozens of aid flights, which have transported medical equipment to Germany and Europe.
