Finnair Cargo has selected HUB Logistics as the terminal operator for its new 37,000sq m Cool Nordic hub due to open at Helsinki airport in May 2017.

The two companies will work closely over the next eight months to maximise the use of the new terminal from the start of operations.

The transition from the current terminal operator, Suomen Transval, will be carried out as a transfer of business, which means that the Transval employees working in the Finnair Cargo terminal at Helsinki Airport will transfer to HUB logistics.

Finnair Cargo Managing Director Janne Tarvainen, said, “Cargo is an integral part of Finnair’s growth strategy and we intend to make the most of the warehouse automation and process optimization capabilities of our new terminal.

“This important step is now a great opportunity for us to significantly increase the volumes of cargo at our Helsinki hub. We look forward to developing the new cargo handling model together with HUB logistics.”

Finnair is developing its new hub in line with a capacity expansion. The airline’s new Airbus A350 fleet will bring up to 50% more cargo capacity by 2020.

Finnair has invested €80m euros in building a new cargo terminal at Helsinki Airport, with special cargo handling areas for pharmaceutical and life science products as well as perishable products, including fish and seafood.

The new state-of-the-art terminal will have a high level of warehouse automation to ensure a high quality of air freight service and competitive handling costs.

HUB Logistics has 21 offices in Finland, Estonia, Russia and Poland.
