“These investments reflect our commitment to serving our customers with the best possible assets, as well as to enabling the movement of vital goods and trade flows through Dubai. CMA CGM Air Cargo to operate fleet of at least 12 freighters by 2026

CMA CGM Air Cargo has added its second Boeing B777F in the space of two weeks and disclosed its plan to operate a fleet of at least 12 freighters by 2026.

The fast-growing carrier took delivery of its second B777F yesterday at a ceremony held at Boeing base in Everett, Washington State.

At the event the carrier also confirmed that it had placed an order for an additional two B777Fs with the airframer. The aircraft are due to be delivered by 2024.

CMA CGM said that when delivered, the new aircraft will complete a fleet of at least 12 Boeing and Airbus aircraft by 2026.

The carrier’s fleet currently stands at: two B777Fs and four Airbus A320Fs. It has also placed an order for four A350Fs.

The delivery of the second B777F comes just days after the first of the model was added to the carrier’s fleet in May. The orders were placed in spring 2021.

Olivier Casanova, chief executive of CMA CGM Air Cargo, said: “The reception of our first two Boeing 777 Freighters, and this new order of two additional aircraft represents a milestone in our fleet expansion.

“With four Boeing 777 Freighters by 2024, complementing our existing fleet of four aircraft, CMA CGM Air Cargo will enlarge its network, linking Europe, Asia and America and provide a tailor-made range of transportation and logistics solutions to our clients, thanks to a modern, technically and environmentally efficient fleet.”

Shipping and logistics giant CMA CGM has been ramping up its presence in air cargo over recent years as it looks to create an offering “that harnesses the tight fit between shipping and logistics”.

As well as creating its own airline and purchasing freight forwarder CEVA, the company has also announced a far reaching partnership with Air France KLM Martinair Cargo.

The two companies signed a 10-year exclusive partnership that will see them combine their current fleets of 12 full-freighter aircraft as well as the 10 freighters they have on order.

CMA CGM is also planning to purchase a 9% stake in Air France-KLM Group as part of the deal.

New FedEx feeder airline AirDialog has started cargo flight operations in the southwest US and is the first new Part 135 air carrier to launch with FedEx in over 20 years.

Based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, AirDialog said its inaugural cargo flight took place recently between Gallup and Albuquerque. The airline is planning additional routes and for the growth of its fleet and team over the next 18 months.

“It’s a groundbreaking opportunity to be a part of the FedEx feeder network, and we look forward to expanding cargo operations to serve customers in the Southwest and beyond,” said David DeRose, president and director of finance for AirDialog and former Ameriflight executive.

The US Federal Aviation Administration granted approval to add the Cessna 208 Caravan onto the AirDialog carrier certificate earlier this year.

AirDialog is a Part 135 airline founded in 2004. In 2022, the company relocated its central base of operation to Albuquerque, New Mexico to provide cargo services.

K+N looks to capitalize on high-tech and automotive demand with new charter route between Hong Kong and Budapest

Kuehne+Nagel has launched a new charter route between Hong Kong International and Budapest Airport as it looks to capitalize on high-tech and automotive demand.

The service will operate on a weekly basis utilizing a Boeing B747-8F aircraft with a capacity of more than 100 tons per flight. After stopping at Budapest, the flight will continue to Liege.

“The service will supply vast air cargo potential to developing high-technology, automotive, and additional pertinent cargo industries in the catchment area of the airport,” Budapest Airport said in a news release.

René Droese, chief development officer, Budapest Airport, said, “Regular full freighter operators, belly cargo service providers, integrators and road feeder operators have always had a key role and high importance on this, and now as a latest trend, forwarding companies have started their own long-haul widebody cargo charter operations to Budapest in the last two years.”

László Szabó, head of air logistics department, Kuehne+Nagel Hungary, added that lithium batteries were a key commodity that would be carried by the service.

József Kossuth, head of cargo, Budapest Airport, commented: “Despite the ever-changing challenges in global supply chain and the logistics market, the airport’s cargo community sees excellent development potential linked to Budapest, which is also powered by long-term positive effects.

“One such example is the booming e-vehicle industry in the capital city catchment zone; the extensive recent investment into e-vehicles, car parts and battery production in Hungary, will have a progressive effect on Budapest’s air cargo growth.”

Kuehne+Nagel (K+N) saw its overall and airfreight profits continue to soar in the first quarter of 2022.

WFS to operate its 1st cargo handling operation at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru

Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) has been awarded a 15-year license to operate its first cargo handing operation in India at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru.

WFS, a global air cargo logistics leader, is entering a new partnership with BIAL which, in May 2023, will assume responsibility for the development, operation, management and maintenance of one of the cargo terminals at India’s third-largest cargo gateway for international import and export cargo. WFS will also operate and invest in the expansion of the airport’s dedicated Cold Chain Facility.

The cargo terminal awarded to WFS at BLR Airport, has the capacity to handle 210,000 Metric Tons (MT) of cargo a year. From May 2023, it will be used exclusively by WFS to handle international cargo. WFS will use its design, build, finance, process reengineering and development experience to reorganize and refurbish the facility to increase its throughput capacity potential to serve cargo volumes in excess of 250,000 MT annually.

As operators of the dedicated Cold Chain Facility at the Airport, WFS and BIAL will begin a two-phase expansion of the dedicated operation, initially doubling its capacity to 80,000 MT per annum before increasing to a throughput capacity in excess of 150,000 MT per annum, post completion of phase 2.

These investments are timed to support the next stage of India’s economic growth. India, the sixth- largest global economy and one of the fastest-growing large economies, is the single largest provider of generic drugs globally – handling over 50% of total global demand and accounting for 50% of the global vaccine manufacturing market – and boasts one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world.

Craig Smyth, CEO of WFS, describes the partnership with BIAL as a ‘landmark collaboration’ at one of the world’s most exciting air logistics hubs. “WFS has been waiting a long time to establish its own presence in India. We are honored to have earned this opportunity to work with the very accomplished and ambitious team at BIAL to realize the outstanding potential of BLR Airport. This is already a very successful airport, supported by a thriving manufacturing and services industry, and a highly skilled regional workforce. To this, WFS will add our highest international standards for safety, security and operational excellence, our ability to invest in optimizing and expanding BLR Airport’s cargo infrastructure, and our global relationships with airlines and freight forwarders,” he said.

Barry Nassberg, WFS’ Group Chief Commercial Officer, added: “few airports in the world combine the growth generators we see in Bengaluru, making this long-term partnership with BIAL a big step in our expansion in Asia. This is a premier airport that understands it’s potential and recognizes the way to achieve its growth ambitions is to work with an industry-leading global partner like WFS. Together, BIAL and WFS will work to sustain growth in the long-term and to achieve the airport’s goal of creating a robust ecosystem that can cater for up to one million tons of cargo a year.”

Speaking of the partnership, Satyaki Raghunath, chief strategy and development officer, BIAL said, “We welcome this opportunity to partner with a world leading global cargo handling organization such as WFS – this will support us in strengthening our position as the preferred cargo gateway in South India. With this partnership, BLR Airport will be able to offer more modern and efficient facilities to our customers. With these improvements, we are confident about being able to grow our cargo volumes and services even more rapidly to meet demand.”
