Next year eight additional aircraft will join our fleet, and we will offer the best connectivity to and from Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius as well as Tampere. Emirates completes A380 fleet with 123rd delivery of iconic aircraft

Dubai, UAE—Emirates happily welcomed its 123rd Airbus A380 superjumbo jet, the final new A380 plane to join its fleet, marking another milestone in the airline’s history.

The aircraft, registered as A6-EVS, was delivered despite the uncertainties brought by the pandemic, showing Emirates’ optimism for the aviation industry’s eventual recovery.

Emirates was the first airline to announce an order for the A380 at the 2000 Farnborough Air Show when the aircraft was still marketed as the A3XX. This was followed with a firm commitment and additional order for 15 more units at the 2001 Dubai Airshow, a bold statement just 6 weeks after the events of 9/11 challenged the industry like never before.

Emirates’ commitment was crucial to the launch of the program that brought together leading European aerospace players and its global supply chain to develop and bring to market the world’s largest commercial aircraft with a full double deck and generous cabin interior space.

Since it first took to the sky, the A380 has continued to capture imaginations, generate excitement wherever it operates, and attract traveler preference for its quiet, spacious and comfortable interiors.

Sir Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline, said: “The A380 is a truly special aircraft in so many ways. For Emirates, it gave us the opportunity to redefine the travel experience, efficiently serve demand at slot-constrained airports, and bolster our network growth. The A380 will remain Emirates’ flagship product for the coming years, and a vital pillar of our network plans.

“The aircraft we are receiving today features our latest cabin products including Premium Economy. Compare it to our very first A380 delivered back in 2008 and you’ll see the myriad of enhancements and upgrades invested in ensuring that the Emirates A380 experience is unparalleled. We’d like to thank Airbus and all of our program partners for enabling us to push the envelope to introduce many innovative ‘industry firsts’, and importantly, deliver the best product for Emirates’ customers.”

Guillaume Faury, Airbus CEO, noted, “The A380 has touched the lives of so many passengers by setting new standards in terms of flying and travel experience. I’m confident that it will continue to do so for decades to come with Emirates, which has continuously introduced new services and products allowing passengers around the world to experience the unique features of their A380s.”

“On behalf of all Airbus teams, I would like to use this delivery milestone to warmly thank Emirates Airline – the biggest A380 operator in the world – for their unwavering trust and partnership. Here’s to many more happy landings!”

The latest Emirates A380 to be delivered features the airline’s latest signature products onboard including First Class Private Suites and Shower Spas, the highly popular A380 Onboard Bar, its new Premium Economy cabin, and the latest inflight entertainment systems offering the best-in-sky personal screens and unmatched choice of content.

At the 2021 Dubai Airshow in November, Emirates also announced a major retrofit program which will see 52 of its existing A380 aircraft fitted with Premium Economy cabins and other enhancements, highlighting the airline’s ongoing commitment to ensuring its A380 experience remains best-in-sky.

Etihad welcomes group of aircraft mechanics to its national workforce

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates –Etihad recently welcomed its first graduates from the Aircraft Mechanics Development Program, after successfully receiving the Category A in Aircraft Maintenance license, approved by the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

Eight UAE national aircraft mechanics, half of whom were female, were recognized at a graduation ceremony held at Etihad Engineering’s hangar. They have completed a two-year program including theoretical classes and practical workshops. The engineers gained in-depth practical experience in various aircraft maintenance areas, working at the Etihad Engineering facility near to Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Commenting on the event, Dr Nadia Bastaki, Chief Human Resources, Organizational Development & Asset Management Officer at Etihad, said: “After careful analysis of the workforce demands at Etihad, critical roles were defined within the organization, and one of the key roles is the aircraft mechanic. As a result, the Aircraft Maintenance Program was introduced in 2019, aiming to develop skilled Emirati mechanics who will play a pivotal role in maintaining the safety and efficiency of Etihad Airways’ fleet.

“We are very fortunate to have eight qualified joiners in our cadre of UAE national graduates, and very proud that half of this technical batch are UAE National females. I’d like to welcome them to our Etihad family and look forward to their achievements and progression as they take their first steps in the aviation industry. This program has been very successful, and we currently have 30 trainees in the pipeline. This is a great opportunity for individuals with strong technical skills and an interest in taking a hands-on role in the national carrier of the UAE.”

The program includes up to 24 months of foundational Maths, Science and English studies at Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), including 13 months of on-the-job training. After several intensive assessments and completion of the GCAA logbook, the aircraft mechanics receive their “release to service” Category A license from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

By obtaining CAT A qualification, the mechanics are eligible to progress towards the Aircraft Technician level upon completing two years of work experience, and then progress their way up to Aircraft Engineer after gaining more experience and undergoing specialized examinations.

Turkish Airlines soaring high for 88 years now

ISTANBUL, Turkey—Turkish Airlines is celebrating this year its 88th anniversary of flying in the skies, 70 years of which in the Middle East and 40 years in the UAE.

Turkey’s national airline celebrated its 40th anniversary of flying to the UAE in synergy with the country’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Established in 1933 with a fleet of five aircraft, Turkish Airlines launched its first Middle East flight to Beirut and Cairo in 1951 and the first TK flight landed in Abu Dhabi on 7th January 1981 with the route relaunching again on January 25th, 2006.

The first flight to Dubai was operated on 05 November 1983, while the Sharjah route was launched on 11 April 2019 with daily flights. Anadolujet operated its first UAE flight on 20 December 2020 by operating daily flights.

Currently, Turkish Airlines operates 28 weekly flights to UAE—21 weekly flights between Istanbul Airport and Dubai Airport; 3 weekly flights between Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport and Dubai Airport, and; 4 weekly flights between Istanbul Airport and Abu Dhabi Airport.

“We are delighted to celebrate 40 years in the UAE. This year started on a positive note with the airline industry opening up and we are focusing our energy on enhancing the travel experience especially for the Expo 2020 in Dubai while keeping in mind the airline’s hygiene protocols necessary for a safe flying experience. Our team is enforcing a higher level of protection for every stage of the journey that goes above and beyond industry standards,” said Emre Ismailoglu, General Manager, Dubai and Northern Emirates, Turkish Airlines.

Hasan Demir, Turkish Airlines General Manager in Abu Dhabi, remarked, “Reaching the 40-year milestone in the UAE is significant to Turkish Airlines. We are confident that the positive outlook of the UAE to normalise the travel industry will be beneficial to everyone and we hope to see more momentum as more travellers come to experience the World Expo. Our team in Abu Dhabi are excited to see an upward trend in our industry and in particular because of the proactiveness of the UAE.”

Turkish Airlines flies to 328 destinations worldwide and new cities are added frequently. More flights are seen to be added between Dubai and İstanbul to accommodate increasing demand between the destinations.

Cargo shipments at Frankfurt Airport face delays due to new custom requirements

Cargo shipments at Frankfurt Main Airport are continuing to face delays as a result of high demand and new customs procedures for imports.

The latest figures from Europe’s busiest cargo hub show that demand at the airport continues to surge – in September cargo volumes increased by 13.4% year on year to 188,177 metric tons while compared to 2019 cargo volumes for the month are up by 7.7%.

Meanwhile, new import rules are contributing to the issues and are slowing down the processing of cargo. The new requirements mean that each individual house air waybill, has to be pre-registered with customs individually and as a result customs clearance waiting times have increased.

Freight forwarder Senator International said the ground handling situation at the airport “remains critical”.

“In addition to the customs issue, there are delays in the global supply chains and the high freight volume,” the forwarder said in a recent update.

Handler Frankfurt Cargo Services (FCS) said it was working through a backlog of shipments and was making good progress.

The company hopes to clear the backlog over the coming days, depending on volumes over that time and also pick-ups by agents.

“[The backlog] is mainly due to irregularities in the implementation of a new software as well as processes both required by new customs guidelines.

“FCS has set back to the previous system and processes, and took numerous actions to clear the backlog.

“This has made good progress in the last days, but still the high backlog causes a high utilization of our warehouses, which further effects the clearance of imported shipments.”

The handler has also employed extra staff while current staff are being deployed in extra shifts.

Additional storage and handling areas have been set up at Frankfurt Airport’s CargoCity South by using three other warehouses as a contingency with partners.

“FCS provides free of charge shuttle services for import to airport warehouses,” the handler added.

A spokesperson for airport operator Fraport said: “The representatives of the air cargo community Frankfurt remain in close contact in order to maintain the flow of cargo at the Cargo Cities.

“However, this strong growth challenges the handling processes as the pattern of traffic since the rebound in passenger volume has clearly changed.

“Passenger and freight airlines often schedule flights at very short notice. On occasion, this leads to isolated but sharp peaks in volume during the course of any given day and on weekends.

“Even though we are only at around half 2019 passenger traffic levels, these peaks come close to the volumes experienced pre-crisis. This requires the support of a great number of staff. At the same time, the strong sustained growth in air cargo, especially with cabin load on preighters, again ties up a large number of personnel.”

The operator said that it was in dialogue with all participants along the supply chain on how to deal with this situation and develop joint solutions with clients.

“Still, we see that the collection of the import freight fluctuates. We therefore appeal to everyone involved to make the best possible contribution to document quality and to a continuous flow of freight and therefore avoiding unnecessary waiting times.”

This final point was re-iterated by FCS, which urged customers to pick up cargo at quieter times.

“Frankfurt Cargo Services is in close contact with its partners and customers at all times. They are continuously informed about current developments and the collection of import cargo is coordinated. It is crucial that import shipments are collected 24/7. Particularly over the weekend, collections are very low.

Fraport added that it had made additional airside areas available so as not to jeopardize warehouse performance and all its employees involved in airfreight handling are working full time and were not on short-term working.

Freight forwarder Flexport said the disruption experienced at Frankfurt is expected to continue for the remainder of the fourth quarter. It added that there were also delays at Schiphol.

“Very heavy strain on import terminals AMS and FRA,” the forwarder said. “Building in extra lead time is vital at destination, as this disruption is expected to persist for the remainder of Q4. Export terminals are also facing strain.”

Handlers at the airport also struggled with volumes earlier in the year, pushing some freighter operators to move services to alternative gateways.

EU, Qatar sign Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement in Luxembourg

The State of Qatar and the European Union signed a landmark Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement in Luxembourg recently, an Aviation Agreement that will ensure the highest level of safety and security, while enhancing connectivity and freedom of movement for travelers.

The State of Qatar and the EU Member States are strategic partners, and the relationship between both parties has been much closer since June 2016, after the European Commission obtained authorization from the EU Council to negotiate this Aviation Agreement.

Delegates from Qatar and the European Commission started negotiations in September 2016 and met for five formal rounds of negotiations, with the conclusion of such negotiations announced during the CAPA Qatar Aviation Aeropolitical and Regulatory Summit held in Doha in February 2019.

Subsequently, the Aviation Agreement was initialed by both parties in Brussels in March 2019 in a ceremony attended by senior officials of the European Commission, EU Member States, major European airlines, and key aviation industry associations and specialized agencies.

This Aviation Agreement represents the new global benchmark for aviation agreements, providing a single set of rules, high standards and a platform for future cooperation on a wide range of aviation issues, such as safety, security, environment, competition, consumer protection, social matters and air traffic management.

Environment is noted as a key highlight of the Agreement, recognizing the importance of working together, to consider and minimize the effects of aviation on the environment.

Qatar Airways, as one of the primary customers of this Aviation Agreement, has already taken bold steps to move forward with several initiatives to address climate change – one of the most pressing topics within the European Union. Qatar Airways, in addition to embracing the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) commitments to carbon-neutral growth beginning in 2020 with further annual emissions reduction targets, is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning with the European Green Deal.

Qatar Airways says it “has a strong commitment to excellence” in all its business operations. It is the first airline in the Middle East to achieve the highest level of IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) certification. It became the first carrier in Middle East to join the ICAO Global Coalition for Sustainable Aviation, reaffirming its commitment to work together with the relevant industry stakeholders, and the IATA Turbulence Aware data exchange platform, ensuring a smoother journey in the air with a lower fuel burn.

Both Qatar Airways and Qatar Executive are not only compliant with ICAO’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), but they are also compliant with the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). Currently, Qatar Airways is working closely with Germany and France environmental agencies that are responsible for its region.

Qatar’s Minister of Transport, Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, said: “the Agreement is a testimony to Qatar’s notable profile in air transportation and that the national carrier has such an active role around the world.”

Qatar Airways Group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker said, “The signature of this historic Aviation Agreement will bring together industry stakeholders, creating new opportunities for synergies to develop the aviation sector. Based on what we have achieved in the past, I am convinced that Qatar Airways will continue to play an ever-increasing role in the further development of the European air transport industry.

As a leading airline, we understand the importance of meeting the targets as set in the European Green Deal and we will continually work together to achieve the climate neutrality goals.”

Etihad Airways transports player statues to Manchester

Manchester City has teamed up with long-standing partner, Etihad Airways in the international transportation of two player statues from across the world to Manchester.

The large scale statues of club legends Vincent Kompany and David Silva have travelled 5,778 miles from the United States to Manchester ahead of their installation at the Etihad Stadium later this week.

Glasgow born and raised, but now operating from his studio in Philadelphia, Sculptor Andy Scott was appointed by the Club 15 months ago to bring the player legends to life in sculpture form. Uniquely, the entire process from commissioning, to design and build has been conducted remotely due to travel restrictions relating to the global pandemic.

Following completion of the statues in Philadelphia, the complex work of logistics and transportation began with Etihad Cargo exclusively providing dedicated and end-to-end service throughout the entire process. Carefully separated into four parts and meticulously packaged, these sizeable statues were trucked from Andy’s studio in Philadelphia to Chicago, loaded onto a Boeing 777 Freighter and flown to Frankfurt and then transported by road to Manchester.

Etihad Cargo’s expertise in special delivery together with the utilization of their extensive global network ensured that the statues were delivered on site and on schedule, ready to be installed for the Club’s unveiling on 28th August.

Commenting on Etihad’s support in the delivery process, Manchester City’s Director of Infrastructure Ed Dalton, said:

“These statues are bespoke and premium pieces of art that have been 15 months in the making.  The precious nature of the pieces together with their sheer size and weight, meant that their transportation across the world to Manchester was always going to be a challenging and complex process.

It was vital that we had an organization with the appropriate logistical know-how, a global network and a team of people with the requisite experience and expertise to take on a project of this kind.

Etihad Cargo’s dedicated team have worked with the Club closely throughout this process and have been the perfect partner – highly organized, professional and collaborative and we are extremely grateful for their invaluable assistance.”

Martin Drew, Senior Vice President Sales and Cargo, Etihad Aviation Group, added, “The Etihad Cargo team is extremely proud to have been chosen by Manchester City to transport this unique cargo shipment.

As partners to Manchester City for more than twelve years, we have watched at close quarters and in admiration at what Vincent Kompany and David Silva have achieved for the Club. Our team was therefore even more excited by this unique opportunity.

The complexity of this operation involved months of planning and technical expertise in close cooperation with the Club. The successful delivery of this highly-confidential consignment demonstrated the teamwork capabilities within the Etihad network.

We are all excited to see these statues unveiled having delivered them safely to what will become their permanent home.”

Singapore Airlines Launches The Upcycling Project

SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) recently launched The Upcycling Project, through which the airline will provide parts and materials from retired commercial aircraft to various Singapore-based organizations and selected global retail brands.

These parts can be upcycled and repurposed to create unique retail products and art pieces, which directly support educational institutions, artists, and persons with disabilities.

The first initiative under The Upcycling Project will be a competition organised by SIA and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), that aims to promote awareness about design and upcycling among tertiary and pre-tertiary students in Singapore. Aircraft parts and materials will also be donated to several educational institutions, which they can use as learning materials for art or design courses.

SIA has also appointed two Singapore-based brand and product consultants, Edwin Low, Founder of Supermama, and Adriana Lim Escaño, Chief Executive Officer of Abry. They will work with SIA to source for local and global retail brands that are keen to repurpose aircraft parts and materials into products such as bags, furniture, fashion apparels and accessories, and service ware. More information on the sale of the finished products will be announced closer to their launch dates.

Local art consultant Jazz Chong, who helms the Ode To Art gallery, will work with SIA to select Singapore-based artists and sculptors who will create unique art pieces using the upcycled materials. To date, four prominent artists and sculptors have been selected. Their completed art pieces will be sold exclusively at Ode To Art.

SIA will also work with SG Enable, an agency dedicated to supporting persons with disabilities, in their i’mable Collective initiative. Aircraft parts and materials will be provided to the i’mable Collective’s makers such as Singapore Fashion Runway and SPD. People with disabilities can fashion them into gifts and products for sale via the makers’ platforms, with the proceeds going directly to the makers.

Mr.YeohPheeTeik, Senior Vice President Customer Experience, Singapore Airlines, said: “The Upcycling Project is a unique opportunity to repurpose parts and materials from older retired aircraft, and find a new use for them. There was a lot of interest when we first broached the concept, and we are happy to be able to support a wide range of communities through this initiative. Our customers and fans will also have a rare opportunity to own exceptional art pieces, as well as the exclusive items that our retail partners will create.”

Professor Chong Tow Chong, SUTD’s President, said: “SUTD is pleased to partner with SIA on this meaningful upcycling project and competition. Through the upcycling design competition, we hope to inspire the next generation of designers and innovators to create novel products from exclusive materials and spread the idea of upcycling among the community. In addition to the competition, SUTD has devoted an entire term studio led by the Architecture and Sustainable Design faculty to creating new products from upcycled aircraft parts. This is in line with SUTD’s vision to create a better world by design.”

Mr. Edwin Low, Founder of Supermama, said: “As a local designer and retailer, I am really excited to be appointed as a consultant for The Upcycling Project. I believe we have some of the most creative minds and talents in Singapore, and I cannot wait to work with Singapore Airlines and the local brands to see what magic can be made from different aircraft parts and materials.”

Ms. Adriana Lim Escaño, Chief Executive Officer, Abry, said: “The retail industry is very competitive, particularly with everyone trying to survive amid the Covid-19 pandemic. This collaboration turns that ‘you versus me’ mentality into ‘we’, by gathering global brands and local designers to work together and breathe new life into aircraft parts. With more participation, there are more possibilities for exciting designs, greater sustainability, and a sense of hope in what we can create together.”

Ms. Jazz Chong, Owner of Ode To Art, said: “Ode To Art is happy to be part of this exciting upcycling project as we partner Singapore Airlines and local artists to create a new, dynamic art environment for the strong collector base in Singapore.”

Ms. Ku Geok Boon, Chief Executive Officer, SG Enable said, “We would like to thank SIA for their support and partnership, which dates back to 2018. This includes featuring the artworks by persons with disabilities on the airline’s amenity kits, and promoting their crafts and products on KrisShop.com. We are excited by this meaningful endeavour that emphasises the values that are close to our hearts – disability inclusion and sustainability. Our makers are delighted with the opportunity to create unique gifts from the materials provided by SIA, and to be a part of this milestone project.”
