MAAS Aviation Earns B Score for Environmental Management
MAAS Aviation, globally recognised aircraft painting and exterior coating specialist, is proud to have achieved a B score for environmental management from CDP, formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project. This positions MAAS as a pioneer in the aircraft painting sector, both in terms of emissions’ reporting and ESG strategy.
CDP is a global environmental disclosure system that helps companies, cities, and other organisations disclose their environmental impact, and is widely recognised as the gold standard in environmental reporting. Yuriy Bolonny, Environmental Compliance Manager at MAAS Aviation and responsible for managing the CDP submission, explains MAAS’ methodology. “Our approach to emissions reporting and reduction is guided by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, ensuring that we address all relevant emissions and operational impacts comprehensively.
“We recognise our activities have an impact on the environment, and take our responsibilities to manage these impacts seriously. As a business, we are dedicated to improving our efficiency, reducing our consumption of natural resources, and to minimising greenhouse gas emissions which result from our activities.”
MAAS has a comprehensive Environmental Policy which is followed throughout all areas of the global business. Tim Macdougald, Chief Business Development Officer at MAAS, highlights some of the key ESG initiatives already in place. “All of our sites across The Netherlands, Germany, Lithuania and United States have been ISO 14001 environmental management certified for many years, and we continue to use our own solvent recycling technologies to recover 80% of the solvents we use, vastly reducing hazardous waste.
“We are also expanding our procurement of certified 100% renewable electricity across our locations, with green electricity already being sourced in Lithuania and more recently introduced to our sites in The Netherlands. At our facilities in USA, we offset 100% of our utility usage to ensure that our operations there contribute to our overall carbon reduction goals.”
Bolonny continues, “MAAS received a B score this year because of several key advances in our approach. We improved our data quality and integrated ESG software, as well as adding carbon accounting systems to streamline reporting and analysis. Our methodology was refined, demonstrating a high level of environmental management and a clear carbon reduction plan across the Company.”
The CDP assessment scores submissions on a range of categories, including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, risk management processes and disclosure, emission reduction initiatives, governance, business strategy, financial planning and scenario analysis, among others. Combined efforts across these different areas are needed in order to achieve top scores, with a B grade being the highest awarded to any SME in 2024.
“Over the next five years we plan to implement further measures which will continue to drive down emissions”, adds Bolonny. “This includes initiatives to use sustainable construction techniques and materials for all new hangars, and designing them to be as close to carbon neutral as possible. We are also reviewing the energy efficiency and insulation of our existing hangars to maximise effectiveness where feasible.
“We continue to procure green energy and improve our waste management contracts to further reduce landfill, as well as working with our suppliers to integrate sustainability efforts into our procurement policies wherever possible. We are actively exploring new ways to continue reducing our CO2 emissions.”
Macdougald concludes, “After just two years of reporting to the CDP scheme, this is a huge achievement which demonstrates MAAS’ contribution to combating climate change and the progress we are making in reducing our impact on the environment. I extend my thanks to the global MAAS team for their hard work in reaching this milestone and their continued support in sustaining the excellent advances we have made to date.”
